Attitudes and Relationships Regarding Law Enforcement Officers

When most people see a “police officer” the automatic emotional reaction is almost always one of fear and mistrust. Why is that? Could it be because most of our life experiences have taught us that they are usually out to catch us doing something wrong, even when we are attempting to act lawfully and respect the rights of our fellow human beings?

There are so many statutes and codes on the books that it is essentially impossible to live in this world without breaking some presumed “law”… so we all become in effect “law breakers” in going about our daily lives. And the law enforcement officials seem to be continually “setting traps” to catch us in the act of violating this endless number of “laws” with the apparent intent of stealing our money and energy through a process that also labels many of us as criminals. So, is it any wonder that we routinely regard police officers with fear and contempt?

What would we like to feel when we see a law enforcement official and how would we like to be able to view them? I believe that most of us want to feel comforted and reassured that we are being protected the moment we see them, as opposed to feeling instantaneous fear. We want to be glad to see them and to feel safe when they are around because we know that they are present to protect us. We also want to feel respect for them and know that they have equal respect for us. We want to see them as our friends and allies.

When “police officers” cease to be corporate policy enforcement officers out to steal our money and freedom and begin to act as genuine “peace officers” operating in the role of our protectors as they are rightfully intended to serve, then the perceptual patterns will change and we will all be better able to work together for our common good. In the mean time, we the people are more likely to help ourselves as well as law enforcement officials as we make a concerted effort to respect them in the job they are attempting to do under the current circumstances. While some of them simply enjoy abusing the power that they assume is theirs to impose at their whim, most are really probably attempting to do their job the best they can, often under confusing and difficult circumstances. Most are ignorant of the wrongs they are opposing upon the people because of the indoctrination they have themselves been subjected to throughout their entire lives and especially in their job training.

It benefits all of us when we attempt to take the initiative in fostering good relationships with law enforcement officials while striving to win them over through education and cordial interactions with them… yes… often easier said then done. However, there is a first line of a song containing the words… “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If we can attempt to approach the progressing transition into developing and expanding the re-inhabited Republic with the attitude expressed in the words of the song, we are much more likely to succeed in not only creating a more rapid accomplishment of our objectives, but also to contribute to a more peaceful and satisfying transformation of our world into the one we want it to be.
